A short one to follow up on a long one - Week 203 - March 16-23
It's funny that when you criticize Harper everybody assumes you are pro Trudeau. Can't I just be anybody-but-Harper? I am kind of pro Trudeau, just because he seems like the most likely choice to make anybody-but-Harper happen. But, it does kind of feel like he's screwing things up. Please just cooperate with the NDP, put forward some meaningful electoral reform and call it a day. Please?
The government has been forced to buy $4.3 Million worth of marijuana. Medical marijuana. For veterans. My friend Slippin' Jimmy probably could have sourced it for a few hundred thousand and use of a warehouse.
Not to worry though. Even though we wasted that money on pot for Veterans, we put $24 Million to good use, advertising on behalf of our Energy Industry in the US of A.
The argument is made that there are potentially Billions to be saved with a National Pharmacare program. I heard Rex Murphy say something this weekend along the lines of "but can the taxpayers afford it?" I'm not really sure if he gets it.
Conservative MP Larry Miller figures that immigrants should "stay the hell where you came from". Which is bad English and a horrible sentiment. He actually thinks that terrorists can sneak into the country by...I think by impersonating another person and hiding their face during a citizenship ceremony? I'm not sure how that works, and As it Happens pointed out that he probably doesn't either. And sorry...I went on a bit of a twitter tirade against some jackass Realtor, agreeing with this garbage while proudly flying his Century 21 employment. I assumed they might care that their name is being attached to a horrible set of thoughts. But they didn't. Unless I made them aware by phone.
Looks like the knee jerk public reaction to Bill C-51 has shifted in the opposite direction. I mean, if you're going to base things on the opinions of people, many of which have not taken the time to research or understand the issue, I guess this is good news.
Microsoft is opening up a new office in Vancouver...and plans to staff it entirely with foreign workers. Well. Not entirely. 20 of the 400 jobs would go to Canadians.
The two Libs accused of...who even knows at this point...will be booted permanently from caucus.
Old news, but more detail on how companies are abusing the new Canadian Copyright rules. Because corporations never try to push the boundaries on legislation solely created for their benefit and always tell the truth in the process of pushing for their creation.

All ISIS, all the time - Week 196 - Jan 26-Feb 2
The Cons seem pretty adamant that they won't tell Canadians how much the non-combat mission to kill Iraqi evildoers is costing.
Because ISIS can get key Canadian strategy from a single number
provided by the government to the people of Canada. That would be more
helpful to them then telling them exactly how many soldiers we sent and
crowing about the things they've accomplished.
Teens! Armed Robbery! Terrorism! This is why we should be afraid of all these "you can't be a terrorist" laws. Seriously? A 15 year old kid is going to rob a store and fly oversees to fight for ISIS? And he should be punished extra because of it? Sorry. This is armed robbery, not terrorism. Thankfully, we don't seem to really have a choice. The Libs have decided to join the Cons (maybe) and are supporting the legislation (I think). And it sounds like some of what is contained in the new "ANTI-TERROR!!!" bill sound like Steve wants our spy agencies to be like a meddling parent. Cancel plane reservations? Block financial transactions? Okay. I'm fine with that. But criminalizing language is all kinds of fucked up and extra-criminalizing people for an arbitrary "TERRORISM" target is unnerving. They know it when they see it, I guess.
The PBO suggests we're heading for a "small" deficit. Who to believe...him or Joe Oliver? Income splitting has raised it's head again. One report says families with incomes higher than $233,000 per year are going to receive the largest benefit. Thank god the little guy is finally getting a break! And it's easy to say the "middle class" receives the largest benefit when you arbitrarily pick a large income that qualifies you as middle class. Joe Oliver thinks $120,000 is that number.
Hooray! We're letting rich people cut to the front of the immigration line again.
This war on crime is fucking amazing! Crime is the lowest it has been since 1969! All thanks to the Cons and their awesome policies! Woo hoo! So...mandatory life in prison. Many people have pointed out that there are already mechanisms in place to achieve this end - but that's never stopped the Cons from introducing laws to make already illegal things super illegal. This time they're proposing life in prison with no chance of parole.
The government spent $650,000 in court (so far) trying to not pay seven Veterans injury benefits.
Anti-Marijuana ads cost $7 Million. Which is quite a lot considering they only really came about when the Liberals started supporting marijuana legalization.
The damage to our information gathering capacity due to the loss of the mandatory long form census has become more apparent. As well, the government continues to put out bad job data. The actual 2014 numbers have been revised down 35%.
Tax revenues are actually up under the "tax-slashing" Conservatives. That's a pretty neat trick they've pulled off.
Fucking idiots. "Expert says spy agencies 'drowning in data' and unable to follow leads". By "fucking idiots" I mean the "fucking experts", not the professionals within our National spy apparatus. (Hi there!). I mean, who doesn't think monitoring every download on the planet isn't a sound strategy?
Some detail on how Health Canada doesn't seem to hold anybody accountable for not following their drug advertising requirements.

Myths - Week 195 - Jan 19-26
Can we kill this myth that Conservative governments are good financial managers? They didn't do well in the US. They haven't done well in Alberta. And all of Canada isn't looking so rosy. Cutting taxes to the detriment of society and the economy is not "sound financial management".
We'll expand on that by looking at oil revenue. You know who isn't having a bad time due to a decrease in oil revenue? Norway. Probably largely due to them taking 10 times what we do in royalties from their oil.
And what about Tom Mulcair? Is this not exactly what he warned us about two years ago? They made fucking attack ads about this! Why isn't he singing this from the rooftops?
Joe Oliver is now lecturing us on the semantics of his statements, and lessons on the passing of time. “We said no earlier than April so by definition it could be later.” Can you believe this asshole is our Minister of Finance? And you're doing a bang-up job, Joe.
He also suggested that the budget won't include "massive, costly bureaucratic programs". Does he mean other than income splitting?
The attack on Trudeau for "the budget will balance itself" seems to have gained traction. I can't find the full interview...but the full sentence seems to be "the commitment needs to be a commitment to grow the economy and the budget will balance itself". So he seems to be saying that if we have a great economy, we won't need to worry about balancing the budget because we'll have enough revenue to fund the programs that we enact. Seems unfair to not give it full context.

Terrorists Win - Week 182 - Oct 20-27
It's been an interesting week. Of course, everything has been over-shadowed by the most Canadian of terrorist attacks. A French Canadian turned West Coaster turned Muslim attacked a War Memorial and Parliament with a rifle before being stopped by a retired gentleman. I don't want to diminish the seriousness of this. It is indeed a terrible event. A soldier is dead (a soldier in place to prevent teenagers from spray painting a war memorial) and, well, two soldiers are dead, but one of them has already been largely forgotten.
But there's been a lot of "this changes everything!" going on. I will admit that this does suggest we need better security at Parliament Hill. Guards with guns, perhaps. But if one crazed lunatic with a gun and one crazed lunatic with a car "changes everything" ...man, we're in trouble.
The response has been muted a bit more than I expected. There's the right mix of discussion about "increased security" and "not caving in to terror". But some of the first words out of Stephen Harper's mouth were about giving law enforcement more tools to do their job. What does that mean, exactly? Do we really need more surveillance? Worse? The hit and run terrorist was already being watched. And the Parliament Hill terrorist had been denied a passport and was on somebodies radar. Is "more tools" the answer to not doing a very good with the tools that we currently have? "Making it illegal to condone terrorism online" certainly isn't a step we should be taking. What does that even mean?
As well, we have this. The PM got shoved in a closet and MP's were wielding flagpoles as spears. And are keeping the spears as trophies.
CBC actually has this as an "Exclusive!". The Parliament Hill shooter used a piece of junk mail as a license plate. Conservatives set to announce new legislation seeking enhanced penalties for using junk mail as a license plate.
The Cons have decided that now isn't the right time to unveil legislation to make it easier to buy a gun.
This was written before the attack on Parliament hill. Greenwald points out that we've been at war for 12 years and shouldn't be surprised that there are repercussions.
Of course, all of this is somewhat related to our "taking it to ISIS". This Tyee article points out that most of the wars and/or saber rattling that we've completed over the last 10 years has been a disaster (Libya. Afghanistan. Ukraine). Trudeau thinks it's Stephen Harper's ego that is the cause of our mission.
This is fairly damning. Canada is ranked last of OECD Nations - 58th overall! - in dealing with climate change. We beat Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia though!
A pretty fascinating interview with Pierre Polievre on partisanship. It would be similar to interviewing Gretzky about scoring goals. If Gretzky was a bit delusional and had insane ideas on how to score goals and painted himself as a non goal scorer.
I'm not super excited about the Christy Clark plan for LNG. Accepting a pittance from multinationals making billions off of our resource seems like a terrible plan.

Where the hell did summer go? - Week 172 - Aug 11-18
You know who else hates Steve? Bryan Fucking Adams! That's who.
Beginning or the end of the Robo-calls scandal? Michael Sona is guilty. But the judge notes that he probably wasn't the only person involved.
So we've barely managed to cut, hack and scrape our way to a theoretical "balanced budget" via fancy footwork and elimination of anything that doesn't serve the oil patch. Time to cut taxes!
Toronto Police teamed up with the CBSA and did some "safety spot checks". Amazingly, they discovered a number of illegal immigrants at the same time. Nothing sketchy about that.
Did I post this last week? Canada doesn't want to let injured Gaza children in to the country for treatment. Well. Canada probably does. Steve doesn't.
CETA seeks to ban any "buy local" plans in public procurement. All the way down to the municipal level.
Steve is trying to use our money to hire our doctors to tell us that we're not correct in wanting pot to be legalized.
Steve loses another court battle. The ban on medical pot cookies is ruled unconstitutional.
Maybe this is why so many of Steve's laws are overturned? Not enough lawyers or resources in the Justice Department.

Province demands name of father so they can deduct child support payments from her income assistance. Cop tries to dupe paternity test and is caught. Hilarity ensues. But what good are any of these benefits? We guarantee that people stay in a ridiculous level of poverty to be able to accept any form of assistance? Need help but have a part time job? Well we'll deduct that money then. Need help but have a spouse that contributes a pittance? Give it here.

The Conservatives seem to attract the sickest of weirdos to run in the Vancouver suburbs. This isn't the first time Wai Young has made shit up about another candidate. Her anti-marijuana attacks on Justin Trudeau are seriously over the top. And done via taxpayer funded mailouts to all her constituents.
Julian Fantino claims injured veterans receive $10,000 per month. Which is true...for four injured veterans. The rest receive far, far less.
Chris Alexander continues to come up with creative ways to not answer questions. Turns out he has a reason to hope nobody finds out how many government sponsored Syrian refugees have made it into Canada.
Mark Adler decided to invite several lobbyists to his fundraising dinner. Nothing wrong with that. Oh, sorry...Conservative MP Mark Adler.
The Conservatives have created a doozy of attack ads, and it seems to suggest that it came from a former Liberal MP.
The Conservatives have finally done something about temporary foreign workers. It's taken a few years, but it's something.
Who knew that government cuts could have repercussions? DFO cuts mean that it's really, really easy to poach fish in BC. And I'm not talking about slowly cooking them in liquid.
Why is our government so terrible at military procurement? There's a Sea King replacement contract, finally. But the winning bid doesn't meet a key safety requirement. Speaking of bad decisions...This guy was involved in the design of the f-16. He rips the f-35 a new one. Too many things for too many people. Good at nothing. Fifth generation is a scam. Stealth doesn't really work.
It has cost Canada $4.5 Million dollars to return to the old style of ranks and insignia. Which isn't a whole lot of money in the grand scheme of things, I will admit. But seeing as there's no plausible benefit to this change, it's a bit of a waste, and a nice reminder that even the smallest of decisions cost a lot of money.

I think that this story perfectly shows how Steve goes about his business. Quietly make shit difficult for people until they reach a point where they can't compete/complete and laugh as an enemy is quietly defeated. It's no secret that Conservatives hate the CBC. And you can spend a lot of time talking about privatizing the whole thing. Or you can just slowly turn back their funding, until they can't compete for important show contracts and just slowly disappear. Maybe the end of Hockey Night in Canada isn't a big deal? Maybe Don Cherry will finally just disappear into a basement to yell at his TV? But I think this is a turning point. And a montage. I feel Steve must be at lest the tiniest bit torn about this one.
